At Leadership Inc. I work with a variety of organizations to assist them to develop research programs, research projects, and conferences/events focused on improving management in government - my life-long interest.
Looking back on my three decades in Washington, I've been very fortunate to have had terrific jobs. I enjoyed my nine years as Executive Director of the IBM Center for the Business of Government (formerly the PricewaterhouseCoopers Endowment for the Business of Government). I also enjoyed my ten years as the first President of the Council for Excellence in Government. I continue to have fond memories of my "early days" in Washington at the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation in the Department of Health and Human Services and at the National Academy of Sciences
I believe that the next four years (and beyond) will be exciting and challenging ones for government. There continue to be many tough issues and problems facing the public sector:
How to enhance the capability and capacity of the career civil service;
How to create effective public-private partnerships;
Finding the right balance between in-house capability and the use of contractors; and tapping the potential of technology to improve government services.
I look forward to continuing work on these issues, as well as related management issues.
